Burma: The Miltary and the Cyclone

The country has been devastated. Thousands of people are still missing. Many in Burma are starving and dying in the wake of the cyclone. They desperately need help, but the military junta has virtually sealed off the country from the outside world.

Bildunterschrift: Großansicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift:  As each day passes, the catastrophic consequences of cyclone Nargis are becoming clearer: the official figure of 23,000 dead could continue to rise. Officials are searching for missing people in the shattered coastal regions. The cyclone has altered the landscape of Burma in places, as satellite images reveal. The United Nations says 24 million people have been affected by the storm - almost half the population. Initial aid deliveries are arriving, but the red tape imposed by the military leaders means that the distribution process is painfully slow.
