Biofuels' fall from grace
The heat is on for scientists to come up with new environmental solutions.
Until recently, biofuels were billed as an environmental wonder, the answer to reducing vehicle emissions. Here in Germany it was thought biofuels would help the country meet its climate protection goals – without sacrifices from its powerful car industry. But that’s not how things have turned out. There's been a backlash over biofuels, sparked by concerns over rising food prices and questions about their real environmental impact.
