Spain: Relying on Grandma and Grampa
Spain's Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has appointed more women than men to his cabinet, sending a signal for equal opportunity. But in everyday life, Spanish women see little change. Having a child usually means having to quit working. Government subsidies for children are lower than in other European Union countries and there are few day care facilities. If women want to continue working after they have children, they usually turn to the grandparents. José Antonio and his wife, for example, are busy with their grandchildren from sunrise to sundown, and in Spain, they're no exception.
