Cyclones and Floods in India: Living with the Force of Nature
Ten to twenty years ago cyclones just meant a loss of crop and a little submergence. But, these days it is threatening human lives, livestock and paddy of rice.
On the shores of the south-eastern state of Orissa people are proving everyday that they are brave enough to take a risk. They live a life of fear; a fear of losing everything at anytime to the unimaginable forces of nature – as many did during the 1999 super cyclone. Thousands of people lost their lives and for those who survived the storm ruined their living conditions. The mangrove forests that once protected the coast line were completely destroyed by the cyclone in 1999 and the sea has come closer. But still, people are trying to persist.
