Controversy - Munich Philharmonic orchestra and conductor Christian Thielemann

When the City Council of Munich announced last week that the contract of chief conductor Christian Thielemann would not be extended beyond 2011, the news sent ripples through the Feuilletons of German newspapers.

 

One of the most prominent conductors in Germany, Thielemann was seen as a perfect match for the Munich Philharmonic’s musical idiom and its ambitions to establish a greater international reputation.  Jens Laurson has been investigating the power struggles between an autonomous orchestra, politicians, and an assertive conductor.
