Julie grew up in England, but she has spent much of her adult life in Germany. She came to (West) Berlin for the first time in 1987 as part of her German-English degree at the University of Leeds. After graduating, she worked as an English teaching assistant at Tübingen University for two years, before returning to Britain where she got a diploma in journalism and started work as a reporter. Later, she was drawn back to Berlin during research for her PhD on East German film. She joined DW-TV in 2001 and DW-WORLD.DE in 2006. Julie also freelances as a translator.
