DW-TV Streams Live to Your Cell Phone

Deutsche Welle, Germany's foreign broadcaster, has made its television programs available live on many mobile devices, making it possible to watch DW-TV while away from your TV and computer.

"The delivery of DW-TV for mobile devices is a component of the multiplatform strategy that we are putting into practice," Deutsche Welle Director General Erik Betterman said.

The new feature is aimed at people outside of Germany who are interested in watching DW-TV but do not want to be restricted by neither the time of a broadcast nor be tied to the television or computer.

"People will continue to access Deutsche Welle content independent of where they are and what time it is," Bettermann said.

Deutsche Welle's live streaming makes use of the Internet and the UMTS mobile network to deliver sound and video to cell phones and other mobile devices, including Pocket PCs and PDAs, in 3GP format. It can be accessed free of charge at: http://mobile.dw-world.de. A UMTS or EDGE capable mobile device is required to watch DW-TV.

The Deutsche Welle has made its news, analysis and background reports in a total of 30 languages available to mobile devices since 2005, and cell phones have been accessing DW's English and German radio broadcasts since 2006. At the beginning of 2007 the Deutsche Welle launched a one-minute condensed TV news program for mobile devices.
