Female Muslim Scholars call out for a Reinterpretation of Islam
There is controversy on what the Quran really says about women
Many non-Muslims, and even some Muslims themselves, consider the Islamic religion as being hostile towards women. Just as some Catholics organised in the socalled “Church from below” are fighting for a more open-minded church, some Muslims are advocating a more modern interpretation of Islam which takes contemporary problems into account. Women from all over the world recently met at a conference organised by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Cologne in order to discuss their ideas concerning a modern form of Islam. High on the agenda were the role of women and human rights.
