Is religion a blessing or a threat to gypsy culture?
French gypsies belonging to the Pentecostal Gypsy Church ‘Vie et Lumiere’ – or Light and Life – have just held a week-long meeting in central France.
Some 40,000 travellers attended the meeting, confirming what other recent rallies have suggested – that evangelical Protestantism has replaced Catholicism as the principal religion of French gypsies. John Laurenson reports on the extraordinary rise of Jesus’s gypsies.
