Carrera – new toy for big boys

Carrera model racing tracks are back in fashion, but this time the target group is men over 50. Just ten years ago, Carrera was threatened with closure; the peak years for the racing cars were the 60s and 70s.

The original founder, Hermann Neuhierl, was intoxicated by the game's success and frittered money away - Carrera was bankrupt. In 1999, Austrian toy manufacturer Stadlbauer took over the company, moved production to China, introduced new models and packed the race track full of electronics and computer chips. Now Carrera is back in the playroom and the brand has a turnover of 120 million euros. With a market share of 94%, Stadlbauer now has a monopoly in Germany. Hagen Tober took a couple of turns round the track for Made in Germany.
