Russia: Las Vegas on the Baltic
There are plans to build a huge complex of casinos and luxury hotels near Kaliningrad. A new law requires all casinos in Russia to close by the middle of next year. The idea is to curtail organised crime and obsessive gambling. But the government has created four special zones where casinos will be permitted--one of them being near Kaliningrad. The city is in uproar: the owners of the existing casinos are angry. Citizens and the Russian Orthodox Church are horrified at the prospect of an enormous new den of iniquity on their doorstep.
