The Homburg Schlossberghöhlen caves - secret man-made passageways and the grandeur of domed halls
Federal State Saarland
Right in the middle of Homburg's green city, an inconspicuous hill is the only sign that Europe's most extensive new red sandstone cave system runs below. But if you want to look inside the hill, you'll have to climb it first - but only so you can take the 146 stairs which slope steeply down into its heart.
Nevertheless, it's still worth going to the trouble, because the Schlossberg caves really are worth seeing. With a total length of 11 Kilometers on 12 levels, they were entirely dug out by hand. The first excavations were in the 11th Century, and the caves housed mass air-raid shelters during the Second World War. There is even a Cold War nuclear shelter there which was never used in anger.
