Biking along the rail tracks - an adventure tour near the Harz Mountains

Federal State Lower Saxony

An increasing number of disused railway lines in Germany have been converted into special tracks for bicycles and inline skates. It's a laborious process, involving local authorities and Germany's state railway operator, Deutsche Bahn, as well as environmental and community activists. And that's before the actual physical work starts.

But this is where the old saying "The Journey is the Reward" really does hold true - the routes are characterized by an almost complete abscence of gradients and cyclists can enjoy a relaxing ride and take in the view. Just remember, delays can't always be avoided, even on disused lines!
