Handicapped Athletes Get Boost in China
China is the superpower of Sports at the moment, as the Olympic Games illustrated. And it looks like the country has good chances to be even more successful at the Paralympics that have just started in Beijing.
Four years ago, handicapped athletes from China won 141 medals at the Athens games, topping all other nations. Just like the non-handicapped athletes, handicapped athletes in China are part of a rigourous and highly efficient state-run sports system. For the athletes, that means their personal lives are completely changed, as Astrid Freieisen found out.
