Neapolitans attack firefighters as garbage crisis deepens
In Naples, Italy, angry residents have attacked firefighters who tried to extinguish blazing garbage. The fires were set by Neapolitans fed up with the prolonged trash collection emergency in the southern Italian city. Firefighters said Saturday that the residents threw stones and in one case attacked them with fire extinguishers. Thefirefighters had to be escorted by police as they put out more than 100 fires overnight. Garbage problems have plagued Naples for years. The latest crisis broke out around Christmas when collectors stopped picking up the trash because there was no more room at dumps. Solving the crisis was a campaign promise of recently elected Premier Silvio Berlusconi.
