German police arrest suspected PKK leader
German prosecutors say police have arrested a suspected leader of the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in Detmold in the west of the country. In a statement police said that the 47-year-old man is thought to have been the leader of the PKK in Germany until last month. The PKK, listed as a terrorist organisation by the European Union and the United States, has been fighting for self-rule in Turkey's Kurdish-majority east and southeast since 1984. The conflict has claimed more than 37,000 lives.
