A conservator stands on a floor mosaic in the Roemisch-Germanisch Museum in Cologne on Friday, July 18. The Roman mosaic, which was badly damaged by hurricane Kyrill in Jan. 2007, shows scenes from the world of Dionysos around 220/230 AD. Made up of around 1.5 million pieces, it was painstakingly restored by a group of more than 20 conservators from the eastern German city of Erfurt and Italy.Florence Addo-Gerth and her husband, Stephan Gerth, proudly show off their two newborn fraternal twins, Ryan (left) and Leo. The two boys were born in Berlin a few days ago. Hospital staffers were just as surprised as the new parents when they saw that Ryan was light-skinned and blue-eyed, while his brother is black. Apparently, the chance of this happening is one in a million.The starvation death of 5-year-old Lea-Sophie in the northern German town of Schwerin shocked Germans last year. The girl had been left to die by her parents in her room after months of neglect. At her death she weighed 7 kilograms (15.4 pounds), half the normal weight. The case led to the removal of Schwerin's mayor, who had been accused of mishandling the situation, in a referendum in April. On Wednesday, July 16, her 24-year-old mother and her 26-year-old father were convicted of murder and sentenced them each to 11 years and nine months in prison. For quite a while now, Berliners have been able to observe the dismantling of the so-called Palace of the Republic, which served as the seat of East Germany's parliament and a venue for mass events. On Tuesday, July 15, demolition workers took down the last of the giant steel beams that used to carry the building's roof. It'll still take a few months, though, until the ruin is completely gone and Berlin's red city hall, seen in the background, will be completely visible from this point of view. The site won't sit empty for too long, though, since the former Imperial Palace is supposed to be rebuilt where it once stood.Mud flats that have recently appeared on North Sea beaches near the German city of Cuxhaven are not exactly something that visitors usually look forward to, but these walkers seemed to have fun stepping on the mess.Hamburg's St. Michaelis church is reflected in a rear-view mirror of one biker at the 25th annual motorcycle church service. Around 39,000 bikers attended the anniversary service along with visitors and onlookers.
