Benno Bleiberg, vice chairman of the Jewish community in Berlin, visited the grave stone of philosopher Moses Mendelssohn at the historic Jewish cemetery in the Mitte district of Berlin on Wednesday, Sept. 24. The place was opened after two years of renovation. Constructed in 1672, it's  Berlin's first Jewish cemetery. The cemetery was destroyed by the Nazis in 1943. Seventy-five players from the European Tour and the top 75 of the Official World Rankings are participating in the event. The Mercedes-Benz Championship has a hugely impressive roll of honor including seven major champions, who between them have won 17 major championships. They are: Sandy Lyle (1987), Jose Maria Olazabal (1988), Bernhard Langer (1989, 1991, 1997 and 2001), Seve Ballasteros (1994), Michael Campbell (2000), Padraig Harrington (2004) and Retief Goosen (2005).
Participants in the Drachenboot Festival 2008 -- one of the biggest dragon boat races in Germany -- are seen paddling their way to exhaustion and, perhaps, victory on the Binnenalster lake in the northern city of Hamburg on Saturday, Sept. 13. Some 2,500 contestants are participating this year in the two-day event, which last year drew an enthusiastic crowd of 80,000 spectators.
