Remembering Lea-Sophie

The starvation death of 5-year-old Lea-Sophie in the northern German town of Schwerin shocked Germans last year. The girl had been left to die by her parents in her room after months of neglect. At her death she weighed 7 kilograms (15.4 pounds), half the normal weight. The case led to the removal of Schwerin's mayor, who had been accused of mishandling the situation, in a referendum in April. On Wednesday, July 16, her 24-year-old mother and her 26-year-old father were convicted of murder and sentenced them each to 11 years and nine months in prison. Bildunterschrift:
