History under the Hammer
Bildunterschrift:
Four restored pieces of the Berlin Wall, pictured here, go up for auction on Friday, Sept. 19. One of the cement chunks contains a door that could only be opened from the former East German side of the Wall. In 1990, shortly after the fall of the Wall, 900 pieces like these were bought up by an agricultural collective to be used to build silos. These pieces, however, were rejected because they'd been too badly damaged by so-called "wall woodpeckers" -- people who'd chiseled out souvenir bits.
