IN DEPTH:

Tibet and the Dalai Lama

"No peace without human rights" That's the slogan of the current European visit of the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. His first stop is here in Germany.

Bildunterschrift: Großansicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift:  In Germany, the Dalai Lama has something approaching star status - surveys indicate that more Germans view him as a moral example than think the same of the German-born Pope, Benedict XVI. The Dalai Lama is in Germany for five days during which time he'll be holding lectures and rallies. For its part, China accuses what it terms the 'Dalai Lama clique' of stirring up unrest and encouraging Tibetans to take to the streets in protest. Beijing has already protested at Chancellor Angela Merkel's having met the Dalai Lama and this time, the only cabinet member who will be meeting the Tibetan leader in exile is Heidemarie Wieczoreck-Zeul, the German Development Aid Minister. But even if politicians in Berlin have no time to be seen with the Dalai Lama in public, he can be sure of one thing - thousands will turn out to welcome him on Monday when he makes an appearance at the Brandenburg Gate.
